Stressing hell

The last few weeks have been absolutely crazy!! I’ve had so much going on both at work and at home, it feels like I haven’t had a second to take a breath. Obviously this has played havoc with my glucose levels and at times it’s felt like I’m fighting a losing battle.

I’m stressed about things that are occurring in my life, which is causing my levels to be all over the place and then, because my levels are messed up I get more stressed. It’s an annoyingly vicious circle!!


But why does this happen? Why does stress have such a negative effect on our glucose levels?

When we find ourselves in stressful situations the body triggers the “Fight or Flight” response. This includes when we face both emotional and physical stresses. Our body prepares itself by ensuring we have the energy to deal with whatever it is that is causing us stress. Our Glucagon and Epinephrine (Adrenaline) levels rise so our stored glucose is released from our liver, into our blood streams.

At the same time, our Cortisol levels rise, which causes our body tissues to be less sensitive to Insulin. As a result, our blood glucose levels rise.

Periods of prolonged stress can be an issue as our levels can be higher than normal for more than just a few hours. As we know, having high running levels on a regular basis can lead to all sorts of complications. It is therefore important to avoid this as much as possible.


However, stress is inevitable! Everyone experiences it at some point in their lives, some more so than others. Some have to deal with it more frequently and a number of people work jobs that mean being stressed is a daily thing. It’s normal and not something we should be concerned about. They key is to know how to handle the stresses we face.

Take a moment to think about what makes you happy. When things are getting a little too much, what do you do to relax?

I like to find a space to clear my head, usually somewhere out in the open where I can walk and inhale the fresh air. I also like to work out at the gym, listen to some good music or spend some time having a cuddle with my favourite person.


Thankfully I am off on holiday today 🙂 I am going to spend 15 nights in the sun and forget about everything that is everyday life. It’s well and truly needed and I am looking forward to feeling lovely and refreshed when I get home.
